My husband and I were married last week by a minister. We believe it is only God who can join us; not the state. It was difficult to find a Minister/Reverend who shared our beliefs. With that said, we did not obtain a marriage license.
I would like to change my last name to my husband’s. We live in MA. A name change can be petitioned in probate court. While obtaining forms online, I called the court with a question regarding forms. Unsolicited, the clerk told me the judge will not grant me a name change based on my reason because there is already a process for doing this; which of course she stated is a marriage license. She added the judge would view my petition as an attempt to thwart the system. I am inclined to moved forward regardless, and would appreciate any advice/ideas from anyone with experience regarding this issue.
Thank you.
